Welcome to the November issue of the OPEN Line, an e-newsletter from Kreiss Johnson Technologies (KJT) featuring news, events, and insights that help utilities capitalize on enterprise power information.![]() "Non-Operational Data: The Untapped Value of Substation Automation" "The Blackout of 2003 serves as a cautionary tale of the dangers utilities face when they do not recognize the subtle, early-warning signs of system weakness. Non-operational data has the power to reveal infrastructure flaws during normal operating situations, allowing utilities to respond to them before they cascade into catastrophic events." In the September issue of Utility Automation & Engineering T&D, power quality analysis expert, David Kreiss, reveals how utilization of non-operational data—complex fault, event, and disturbance data from protection, control, and power-recording devices—is the key to improving the performance of the distribution infrastructure as well as the bottom line. ![]() KJT Welcomes New VP Sales Tim Shaw has recently joined KJT as VP of Sales, bringing over 27 years of experience and innovation in the areas of substation and process automation and related technologies. "Time and time again, Tim has successfully translated customer needs into new products," stated David Kreiss, KJT founder and president. "The breadth of Tim's senior-level expertise in the substation automation industry will be invaluable in pushing OPEN to the forefront." Read the press release.
Dear Utility Professional,
I look forward to working with you to find new applications of OPEN that will help you get the most from your power, power quality, and energy data. I am confident that OPEN's ability to leverage non-operational data will enable you to improve reliability and reduce operating and maintenance costs. Regards, Tim Shaw ![]() KJT's latest brochure details how OPEN helps utilities realize the benefits of collecting, correlating, and analyzing non-operational data. Download the PDF. ![]() Exhibition Exhibit 319, Jan. 20-22, 2004, Orlando, Florida KJT looks forward to seeing you at DistribuTECH, where we and our OPEN partners will be unveiling our new substation automation technology! DistribuTECH is now in its 14th year and encompasses automation and control systems, IT, T&D engineering, power delivery equipment, and water utility technologies, giving you all the tools and networking opportunities you need to succeed in today's utility industry. User Group Meeting - OPEN Roadmap Mon., Jan. 19, 7 PM Current and prospective customers as well as members of the press are cordially invited to a private preview of KJT's plans for the OPEN software system. At this presentation we will introduce the product roadmap for OPEN and how this plan will help utilities unlock the power of non-operational data. KJT partners will also present OPEN-compatible products and services. For more information, please contact Tim Shaw. Conference Panel Session "Beyond SCADA in Substation Automation: Managing Non-Operational Data" Wed., Jan. 21, 10-11:30AM Correlation and analysis of non-operational data can increase system availability and reduce operation and maintenance costs. However, it has been difficult to integrate the components necessary to collect, warehouse, and utilize non-operational data. The challenges include the unique multiple-vendor equipment in each substation and the unsuitability of non-operational data to industry-standard protocols. Reaping the benefits of non-operational data will require the cooperation of all substation equipment vendors. Moderators: John McDonald (KEMA) and David Kreiss (KJT) Panelists: Kenneth L. Cummins (Visalia), Ron Farquharson (GE Power Systems), and David Dolezilek (Schweitzer Engineer Laboratories) Utility University Courses KJT's Tim Shaw has lectured extensively both in the U.S. and abroad on SCADA systems, substation automation, and a variety of other computer-related topics. At DistribuTECH, you may join Shaw for his courses on the following:
Basic Introduction to Hacking and Cyber Security Concepts
Sun., Jan. 18, 1-5PM This course will introduce the basic principles, terminology, and technologies of computer system security and network security, exposing the ways in which computer systems and networks can be attacked, especially via the Internet. Introduction to Communications, Networking and LAN/WAN Technology Mon., Jan. 19, 8 AM-12 PM This course will introduce non-communications professionals to the basic technologies and terminology of digital communications, including an overview of current communications technologies. Advanced Communications, Networking and LAN/WAN Technology Mon., Jan. 19, 1-5 PM This course introduces the concepts, standards, and technologies of LANs and WANs to the engineer or technician who already has a basic understanding of communication technologies. The course focuses on the hardware and software building blocks, TCP/IP architecture, and Internet-related technologies that are used to construct networks. ![]() Founded in 1994, Kreiss Johnson Technologies (KJT) delivers intelligent power information management solutions that meet the demanding needs of utility companies. The company's flagship product, OPEN, is the industry's only hardware-independent, enterprise-level software system for power information management. OPEN acquires, correlates, and analyzes non-operational data and delivers results to utility teams using automated reporting mechanisms and graphics via the Internet.
